Manchester City may have to look elsewhere as a Leverkusen star looks set to stay in Germany

Manchester City may have to look elsewhere for a new midfielder this summer. Florian Wirtz has been mentioned as a possible summer target for the world champions. But a recent report indicates that Wirtz appears set to stay at Leverkusen this summer. If that proves to be the case, the world champions will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.

Speaking with the JD football YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that he doesn’t see Florian Wirtz leaving Leverkusen this summer. He did, however, reveal that a potential move in the summer of 2025 or 2026 may be on the cards for the German international. Romano said: “I don’t think it’s going to be this summer. I think there is a chance to see him leaving in the summer of 2025, maybe 2026. The player is really happy at Leverkusen.”

Romano further added that Manchester City was one of several clubs monitoring the progress of the Leverkusen midfielder. He explained: “The strategy is clear. It’s to continue together for one more season at least. But I can confirm that many top clubs are keeping a close eye. English top clubs, you mentioned Man City , and others are always sending their scouts to follow this boy.”

Could Manchester City switch attention to a Bayern Munich star instead?

If Florian Wirtz is off the market, could Manchester City shift their focus to Bayern Munich star midfielder Jamal Musiala instead? The midfielder has been linked with a potential move to the Etihad this summer. Harry Pratt has reported for the Mirror that the world champions are confident of securing Musiala’s services after the German international rejected a contract extension with Bayern Munich.

If City are forced to move on from their reported interest in Wirtz, then Musiala could be the ideal candidate for a potential move to Manchester City. With Kevin De Bruyne approaching the twilight of his career, the treble winners will soon be in need of a possible replacement for the club legend. Phil Foden is one player who appears primed for a move into midfield, but another option in that area of the pitch appears a priority for the world champions. The potential pairing of Musiala and Foden could provide City with a talented midfield duo for the foreseeable future.

If Florian Wirtz does stay at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, then Manchester City will have to focus elsewhere to strengthen their midfield options. Jamal Musiala could be the ideal candidate if he becomes available this summer.
