Alex Albon was involved in an accident on the track during the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix. Fortunately, he was unharmed, but the car sustained significant damage. The team verified that they were pulling Albon’s chassis by using their social media handles.

The team had to make a tough decision due to not having an extra chassis available, and they gave Logan Sargent‘s chassis to Albon. Eventually, the latter didn’t finish in the top ten at the Australian GP, and many wondered whether the team had made the right decision.

While writing in his column for F1, Jolyon Palmer, claimed that the team took the wrong decision.

The decision to put Alex into Logan Sergeant’s car was a difficult one for Williams, one that James Vowles said was the toughest decision he’s had to make – and I don’t doubt that, but I believe it was the wrong move . Jolyon Palmer said: Formula1

According to Palmer, the reason why Williams made that decision was because they were not that confident with their American driver. Logically the team made the right decision, by prioritizing the team’s interest. This could only mean one thing, perhaps Sargent has to prove his worth to the team.

Williams still doesn’t have a third Chassis

As mentioned earlier, after Alex Albon‘s crash in Melbourne, the team had to make a tough decision to withdraw his chassis and give him Sargeant’s. The team immediately sent the Thai-British driver’s chassis back to their headquarters to figure out all the repairs they would need.

James Vowles addressed all the questions regarding it during Melbourne’s team principals’ debrief.

We won’t have a spare chassis in Japan. The original plan before the season started was to have three chassis as you would expect at round one and that gently slipped towards round three as items became more and more delayed. Since then, and especially with the work we’re doing now on chassis number two, there is again going to be a small amount of delay. That said, we will have a (third) chassis soon. Williams is working on their current two chassis in which Albon and Sargent will be performing at the Suzuka International Racing Circuit. The team has an immense load due to the repairs on Albon’s chassis, which has cost them a lot of time. As a result, the team was unable to work on the third chassis, but despite this, they are hopeful of having a third chassis soon.
